Man arrested for threatening officer with nail filled club

MONTICELLO – A 53-year-old Monticello man has been charged with menacing a police officer by holding a wooden club full of nails over his head.

The man, Edwin Martinez, who was described as being highly intoxicated, had been yelling and screaming racial slurs at several of his neighbors and banging on their doors.
Officer Jason Corley responded to the scene and while he was interviewing neighbors, Martinez came out of his apartment at the Sleepy Hollow Apartments, armed with a three-foot long club full of nails and held it over the officer’s head in a threatening manner.

The officer drew his duty weapon and ordered him to drop it, which he did after he was ordered to do so several times.

Martinez was charged with menacing a police officer as a felony and the misdemeanors of criminal possession of a weapon in the fourth degree and endangering the welfare of a child.
