Man
shot during card game holdup
NEWBURGH – City Police in Newburgh are looking for a man who
broke up an early morning card game Tuesday and shot one of the
participants in the shoulder. The bullet shattered his humorous
bone and exited through his armpit.
A group of several men were playing cards in a garage in the rear
of 45 City Terrace shortly after 1 a.m. when an armed man, described
as a black Jamaican, came in, ordered everyone on the floor and
then fired one round into the ceiling, said Lt. Charles Broe.
The suspect demanded everyone’s cash and cell phones and told
the victims to place them into a bag.
When the victim apparently couldn’t get his cell phone from
his belt fast enough, the suspect shot him in the left shoulder.
The bandit then fled the scene on foot with the phones and money.
The gunshot victim was then placed in a vehicle and driven to the
hospital. He was transported to Westchester Medical Center for treatment
of his injuries, not thought to be life-threatening.
Detectives are investigating the case and have found a bullet fragment
at the scene. Anyone with information about the incident is asked
to call the police at 845-569-7531 or 569-7509. All calls will be
kept strictly confidential.
