MONTICELLO -- Sullivan County Sheriff’s deputies have arrested a Monticello man for making false statements on a pistol permit application and unlawfully registering to vote.

Shefki Bragimaj, 32 of Monticello was arrested Wednesday, May 21, as a result of a background check that was conducted by the Sheriff’s Office when he submitted an application for a New York State pistol permit. On the application Bragimaj indicated that he was a U.S. citizen, when in fact he is a citizen of the former Yugoslavia.

Deputies also discovered that Bragimaj had filed a voter registration application with the Sullivan County Board of Elections and had indicated on that document that he was a U.S. citizen.

Bragimaj was charged with the Felony of Making a False Statement on a Voter Registration Application and two misdemeanor counts of offering a False Instrument for Filing.

He was released on an appearance ticket pending a future court date in the Village of Monticello.
