Traffic stop leads to recovery of handgun, heroin

NEWBURGH – City Police in Newburgh have charged a 48-year-old Newburgh man with possession of a weapon and drugs after he was stopped for a vehicle and traffic violation.

The incident occurred shortly before 11 p.m. on May 12 when police pulled over Roberto Sanchez, Sr. When he was frisked, police found a magazine for a handgun and 31 glassine envelopes with heroin in his pants. The magazine contained nine .22 caliber rounds.

Police also found a plastic bag with a Ruger .22 caliber handgun on the center console of his vehicle.

He was charged with criminal possession of a weapon in the second degree and criminal possession of a controlled substance in the fifth and seventh degrees.
