Police probe rash of vehicle break-ins

MID-HUDSON – Police agencies on both sides of the Hudson River are investigating rashes of motor vehicle break-ins with property being stolen from them.

City of Poughkeepsie Police are investigating numerous vehicle break-ins throughout the city with the majority occurring after midnight. Property stolen includes GPS devices, satellite radio receivers, stereos and loose change.

Vehicle break-ins have occurred on a number of streets since Sunday, May 4, including on High Street, Balding Avenue, Long Street, South Hamilton Street, North Clinton Street, Spruce Street, Corlies Avenue, Gifford Avenue, Hooker Avenue and Forbus Street.

In Eastern Orange County, police in the City and Town of Newburgh and Town of New Windsor, all members of the IMPACT partnership, have been investigating motor vehicle break-ins recently as well.

In the Town of Newburgh, the larceny sprees have occurred in small residential neighborhoods in which unlocked cars were broken into overnight. Those sprees were in the southern most area of the town east of the Thruway to the Newburgh city line and south of Gardnertown Road.

In the City of Newburgh, a small residential area where several unlocked cars were parked was also hit overnight.

The Town of New Windsor has also experienced a spree of break-ins north of Union Avenue to the Newburgh City line and east of Windsor Highway.

Residents of all areas are urged to never leave valuable property in plain view in vehicles. Those with GPS devices are advised to remove the suction cup holder from the window as well, as it can attract thieves. Anyone observing suspicious persons or activity around vehicles is asked to call their local police agency
